Setup wizard — first launch

When you open the app for the first time, a setup wizard walks you through three quick steps so you're ready to score your first round:

  1. Build your bag — add the clubs you carry so the app can track them hole by hole
  2. Find your course — search the database or enter pars manually from a scorecard
  3. Back up your data — save a copy of your profile before you play your first round

If you skip a step, the wizard stays available from the Setup → About tab until all three steps are done.

Get your course into the app

Three ways to add a course — from a live database search down to manual entry from a scorecard.

1
Search our course database
Fastest

My Golf Insights pulls from a live golf course database. Search by course name or suburb — if your course is listed, all hole pars and tee box distances are imported in one tap.

  • Open the app → Setup → Courses → Search
  • Type your course name
  • Select the correct course from results
  • Confirm tee box (White, Yellow, Red, etc.)
  • Hole pars and distances are ready to use
2
Enter from a scorecard
Manual

If your course isn't in the database, take a photo of the scorecard for reference and enter hole-by-hole pars and distances manually. Takes about 3 minutes for a full 18-hole course.

  • Setup → Courses → Add New Course
  • Enter the course name and tee box colour
  • For each hole: enter par and distance (yards or metres)
  • Save — course is available for all future rounds
Coming soon Photograph a scorecard — app will read the pars and distances automatically
3
Import tee box CSV
Power users

If you manage multiple courses or have course data in a spreadsheet, import it via CSV. Useful for clubs wanting to set up a standard course for all members.

  • Setup → Import → Courses CSV
  • Download the template CSV to get the correct column format
  • Fill in course name, hole numbers, pars, distances per tee box
  • Import — all courses and tee boxes added at once

Track what you work on between rounds

The coaching report tells you what to practise. The practice log records that you actually did it — and over time shows whether your practice is translating to the course.

Logging a session

  1. Tap My GamePractice Log
  2. Enter the date and how many minutes you practised
  3. Tag your focus areas (select all that apply)
  4. Add notes — what you worked on, what clicked, what didn't
  5. Save — the session is added to your history

Focus areas

Driver Irons Wedges Putting Chipping Bunker Course Play Mental Game Fitness

Tag multiple areas per session. Over time you can see which parts of your game get the most attention — and cross-reference with your coaching reports to check if practice is matching your actual weaknesses.

Sunday 11 May · 45 min Bunker · Chipping
Worked on greenside bunker explosion. Getting the bounce to work — clubface open helped. Still decellerating on buried lies.
Friday 9 May · 30 min Putting
Lag putting from 20–30 feet. 3-putt rate has been too high. Focused on getting the first putt within 3 feet of the hole.
Wednesday 7 May · 60 min Irons · Wedges
50–80 yard wedge shots. Coached said to focus here — GIR from under 100 yards is worst category. Drilled bump-and-run from tight lies.
3 sessions this week · 135 min total

The app also includes a warmup checklist you can run through on the range before your round. Tap each item as you complete it — arrives at the first tee ready, not cold.

Stretch — hips and shoulders
Wedge shots — 5 chips
Short irons — 8 and 9 iron
Mid irons — 6 and 7 iron
Driver — 5 balls
Putting — lag putts from 20 feet
Short putts — 5 from 4 feet

Quick reference for the scoring sheet

What each field means and when to fill it in.

Tee Result

What happened with your tee shot on par 4s and 5s.

  • Hit — ball on the fairway
  • Short — came up short of the fairway
  • Long — flew past the fairway
  • Left / Right — missed into rough or hazard
  • Rough / Sand — specific lie after a miss

Approach Result (GIR)

Whether you reached the green in regulation — in time to two-putt for par.

  • On — on the green in regulation
  • Short / Long — missed but recoverable
  • Left / Right — short-sided or in hazard
GIR = on the green in (par − 2) shots or fewer.

Penalties

Tap the Penalties button to log stroke-and-distance penalties. The sheet tracks three types:

  • Water / Penalty Area — ball in water or red/yellow stake area
  • O.O.B. — out of bounds (stroke and distance)
  • Unplayable — ball unplayable, player takes relief

Shot Tags (Pro mode)

In Pro mode, you can tag the type of contact or decision for each shot. These tags are used by the coaching engine to detect patterns.

  • Fat — struck the ground before the ball
  • Thin — struck the top of the ball
  • Hero Shot — high-risk attempt (tree gap, long carry)
  • Club Up — reminder to take more club next time

Your data, your way

Export, import, back up, and transfer your round data. Everything works through standard CSV files — no proprietary lock-in.

☁️

Automatic backup reminder after every round

When you finish scoring a round, the app shows a backup card at the bottom of your screen. One tap sends your full data file to your phone's share sheet — save it straight to iCloud Drive, Files, Google Drive, or any app you choose.

☁️ Save to iCloud (iPhone/iPad) — sends a full JSON backup to your iOS share sheet. Save it to iCloud Drive, Files, or AirDrop to another device.
⬇ Backup Now (Android & desktop) — downloads the backup file directly to your device.

The card shows how many days since your last backup and turns red if you're overdue. If you miss it, you can trigger a backup any time from Setup → About → Backup Now.

📤

Export your rounds (CSV)

Download your full round history as a CSV file at any time — opens in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet app.

  • Go to Stats → Export CSV
  • One row per hole across all your rounds
  • Includes score, putts, club, tee result, GIR, approach distance, penalties, and notes
CSV export is great for spreadsheet analysis. For device backup or transfer, use the JSON backup (Setup → About → Backup Now).
📥

Import rounds

Re-import a previously exported CSV to restore your round history — for example after reinstalling or switching devices.

  • Go to Setup → Import → Rounds CSV
  • Use a file exported from My Golf Insights (or match the template format)
  • Duplicate rounds are skipped automatically
  • Scoring mode column is preserved on import
Download the round import template from Setup → Import to see the exact column format before building your own file.
🔄

Switching devices

Your data lives on your device, so moving to a new phone is a two-step process:

  1. Step 1 — Export your rounds CSV from your old device (Stats → Export CSV)
  2. Step 2 — Install the app on your new device, then import the CSV (Setup → Import → Rounds CSV)
Save your export to cloud storage before you wipe or trade in your old phone.
🏌️

Course import template

Set up custom courses in bulk — useful if your club has multiple tee boxes or you manage rounds for a group.

  • Go to Setup → Import → Courses CSV
  • Download the course template — one row per hole, one section per tee box
  • Columns: course name, tee name, hole number, par, stroke index, distance (yards)
  • Import as many courses as you like in one file
Share your course CSV with playing partners so they don't have to set up the same course manually.
💾

Recommended backup routine

After every round: tap the backup card that appears at the bottom of your screen and save the file to iCloud Drive or your preferred cloud storage. That's it — one tap, one file, everything protected.

Why this matters on iPhone: iOS can clear Safari PWA data if the app goes unused for 7 days or if you clear your browser history. Your backup file lets you restore everything instantly — don't skip it.
